What is air conditioning?

Air conditioning is the process used to control the temperature in a room and clean it from any allergens and dust floating around which may cause health problems, by removing hot air, cooling and cleaning it and then putting it back in the room. Many people are aware that air conditioning will make the temperature in a room cooler and more comfortable but very few are aware of why and what other benefits air conditioning systems can give you and your home.

Air conditioners work somewhat like a refrigeration system. The air conditioning process starts when removing the hot air from the room and pumping it into the air conditioning unit using a compressor. Inside the system there are two coils, a cooling coil and a hot coil which cool and dehumidify the air as it is pumped around the coils. Once the air has been pumped around these coils it will be cooler and dehumidified and ready to pump back into the room. The new cooler and fresher air will naturally combine with the air in the room to reduce the temperature of the room.

Air conditioning systems can also work as heaters by reversing the air conditioning process. You can easily change the settings of the system so the cold air from the room is pumped into the air conditioning system and pushed around the hot coil which heats the air. The hot air is then pumped back into the room which increases the temperature. This is not appropriate for heating to high temperatures and does not work as a permanent replacement for a heating system.

If you have a problem with damp air in your home then an air conditioning system can also cater for this rather than purchasing a dehumidifier, which will be another piece of expensive equipment. When the air is pumped into the air conditioner, it works like a dehumidifier; the heat will be condensed and collected in a water tank in the system.

There are various types of air conditioning systems which all serve the same general air conditioning purpose, but come with their own range of advantages and disadvantages which you will need to consider before purchasing; this could potentially be a very expensive piece of equipment if you want all of the features available. Some of these features include a thermostat, climate control, advanced air filters and differing strengths for the all of the different room sizes.
