The Great Sunday Lunch - Surprise findings in Wales - Friday 26 September 2008

It appears that we are no longer quite such a celebrity obsessed nation. More than half of us would turn down an opportunity to tuck into Sunday lunch with top sports personalities, famous politicians or even reality TV stars! New research conducted by the polling firm Populous for Age Concern and Aunt Bessie's Great Sunday Lunch shows we have an outstanding preference for lunching with our family, with the Welsh being the most family minded of all.

Age Concern Cymru’s comment to the South Wales Argus – 23 September 2008

-  Response to GMB motion at Labour Party conference 2008

Age Concern Cymru’s Michael Phillips said: “The government needs to re-link state pensions to average earnings as soon as possible.  With the recent huge rises in fuel and food bills, pensioners across Wales have seen the real value of the basic state pension fall quite sharply.  Had successive governments retained the link between pensions and average earnings from 1980 onwards, the average pensioner in Wales would be better off by more than £50 per week right now.  This extra money would have been a great help to the thousands of pensioners in Wales who put their health at risk by scrimping on their heating and food to make ends meet.”

The charity is launching a national campaign across Wales later this autumn on access to good quality foot care, and this fringe meeting will provide an ideal opportunity to discuss some of the key issues being featured in the campaign.

Age Concern Cymru pays tribute to the late Leo Abse - 21 August 2008

Age Concern Cymru’s Equalities Manager, Martyn Jones, pays tribute to the late Leo Abse who as a prolific back bench reformer guided through Parliament a Private Members Bill in 1967 that legalised sex between consenting adult men and who also assisted in the liberalisation of divorce legislation through the Divorce Reform Act in 1969.

Martyn Jones said: “There is a strong correlation between the current social reform agenda of Age Concern Cymru and the crucial work undertaken by the former MP.  We work very closely with the Older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (OLGBT) Network to help ensure that the views of older LGBT people are taken on board by policy makers in Wales.

“Of course there is still much work to be done to combat the prejudice and discrimination experienced by older gay people, but the situation would have been far worse today had not been for the political activities of the late Leo Abse.  The longevity of his career is also an important reminder that we should enable older people to remain active and involved in shaping society for as long as possible.”

'Down but not out' campaign - 12 August 2008

Age Concern Cymru is pleased to support the launch of Age Concern England’s “Down but not out” campaign.   Age Discrimination is a particular problem within mental health services in Wales and this creates an unfair and inequitable system within which older people are disadvantaged.  Mental health services are often split between those for “adults of working age” (up to 65) and those for “older people” (65 and over).  The result is that many people are forced to move to a different service upon reaching 65 often leaving a familiar service that is working well for them and joining a new, unfamiliar and often inappropriate one.  Other older people find that they no longer fit the support criteria for their local service and are therefore excluded from sources of support that they require.

Comment given to South Wales Echo in response to the story of a pensioner found dead in his home after lying there for more than two months – Monday 11 August 2008

Age Concern Cymru’s Michael Phillips said: “It is an awfully sad situation.  Unfortunately it is not a one-off incident as there are lots of older people in south Wales living in isolation.

“Social service departments throughout the area have cut back on the number of services they provide to older people to save money.  As a result services such as meals on wheels are now more likely to be delivered on a weekly basis rather than daily. Similarly, many community transport schemes have also been cut back or removed altogether because the volunteer drivers can no longer afford escalating fuel costs.

Minor increase in Winter Fuel Payments offer little cheer to Welsh pensioners - Wednesday 12 March 2008

The chancellor’s proposal to make a small increase to the Winter Fuel Payments will offer little cheer to Welsh pensioners.   Age Concern Cymru’s spokesperson, Michael Phillips said: “While the proposal to increase payments by £50 for pensioners below 80 years of age and £100 for all other pensioners is welcome, it goes no where near far enough to help those still reeling from recent hikes in energy bills.  It is also disappointing that the increases are only one off payments and that the chancellor has made no real commitment to tackle fuel poverty amongst older people on a long term basis.

Many pensioners will feel frustrated that the chancellor has failed to bring forward the date to re-establish basic state pensions to earnings.  Had the link been maintained pensioners would be better off by as much as £50 each week.  They will also be disappointed that the chancellor has not committed the government to reforming Council Tax which is currently based on the value of somebody’s home and not their ability to pay.”

Budget 2008 - An opportunity to lift 117,000 pensioners in Wales out of poverty

- Wednesday 12 March 2008

The government’s budget proposals for 2008 present the chancellor, Alistair Darling, with an ideal opportunity to improve lives of the 117,000 pensioners in Wales that are currently living in poverty, says Age Concern Cymru.

The charity’s spokesman, Michael Phillips, said: “Pensioners in Wales have had to cope with huge rises in their energy and water bills.  They have also suffered massive hikes in their council tax resulting in many older people becoming ‘asset rich cash poor. Therefore we are urging the chancellor to re-link the basic state pensions to earnings which would mean pensioners getting an extra £50 a week."

Comment on Energy Companies - 21 February 2008

The Director of Age Concern Cymru, Robert Taylor, said: “Many older people don't feel they are getting a fair deal from energy companies.  Over the last few months consumer have seen massive increases in their energy bills.  These rises are forcing more and more vulnerable older people on low incomes into fuel poverty.  It is vital that older people are not forced to cut back on heating in a bid to reduce bills, it shouldn’t be a case of health versus wealth.”

Age Concern publishes a free leaflet ‘Money in Your Pocket’ on the benefits and help available to older people which are available from our freephone information line on 0800 00 99 66 or www.ageconcern.org.uk
